Today we had ignite, grade 3 buddies, grade 2 buddies, then we did our Ratio test and started planning our short stories. 

In the afternoon we marked our test, and we marked out math rich task, and really dove deep into explaining our new social project ---- storyboard of a certain charter right or freedom.

We will be waiting to see how the students work next week before assigning a due date.

Today we had to start the day cleaning my room, because it was out of control again when I was tasked to be admin on Tuesday, the students became a little messy with a sub teacher.  Then we finished and hung up our literary term posters.

After music we worked on our problem solving skills and our ratio skills. It was a very opened question about hosting a party and needing food; specially how hot dog packs and buns never match up.

After that we worked on planning our stories before heading to the library to get new books.  That was followed by Mission Impossible.

In the afternoon we learned about the new social project about the charter, had a lovely presentation from a student about the new deadly virus in China, and then we concluded with an awesome presentation from G.P. Vanier school.  The presentation was about what there school entails and when their open is.

Sorry I missed the blog on Monday, I have admin meetings every Monday, and just must have slipped my mind....I know that is an excuse, I will try to be on it!

Today we did more ratio practice for our quiz Thursday.  After music, we had our snack and read personally until LA.   During LA we read 3 short stories and answered questions about them.  Then we made some fun "what if" stories that helped get the planning juices flowing.  Next, students had to work on planning their actual short stories that will be going through the writing process with.

After mission impossible, the students had science with Mr. Mueller learning about how animals fly. In social we learned about all about the basic 9 rights and freedoms we have entrenched in the constitution.

Today was, well a whirlwind! We had our assembly and cleaned up after it.
Then we worked on ratios in math to prepare for our quiz next week.
We then undertook the massive job of cleaning my classroom!! It was very good to see everyone working together for a common goal.   Then we read before gym.

Today in class we did ratios about hockey and was a big success.  We helped our grade 3 buddies in math and our grade 2 buddies in writing stories.    In the afternoon we learned about discrimination and prejudice while discussing the charter of rights and freedoms.

Today in class we dove into some tougher ratios to gauge the level of understanding.  The students did really good for the most part. We will be continuing ratios into next week and be done next Thursday.

After that we learned about what makes a story worth reading.  I will be reading, marking, and providing feedback to their stories this weekend.  Then we had library and gym.

In the afternoon we finally started our Charter of Rights and Freedom unit.  Hopefully this unit doesn't last too long and then we can dive into Ancient Athens.

Today was a busy day!  Sorry I was ill yesterday.  We did ratios until music.

In music please talk about child's behaviour.  Lots of students are not respecting the sub and we need to change it.

After music we read, until LA.  In LA picked apart a picture about how to use it to write a story for our January 1hr story writing.

I will be marking them this weekend.

After gym we had social, we marked the social tests, they are to be returned and signed please.

In science they made airplanes to learn about the forces of flight.

We had Ignite, then did our basic fact triweekly quiz, and we did our monthly reading comprehension quiz too with a focus on close reading using annotations.   After that we did a math card game with our grade 3 buddies.

After gym and mindfulness, they had science and in social we practiced for our unit test doing student made Kahoots.

Today we started with Ignite, then dove into ratios.  The students were starting to get it now :)

After math we had our snack and did DEAR time. 

In LA we learned about the importance of dialogue and the 10 rules to make writing it easier.

In the afternoon we did flight with Mr. Mueller and practice for our unit test this Friday, by doing kahoots.

Key terms:

A REFERENDUM allows eligible voters to vote on an issue proposed by the government. SUBSIDIES are funds that the government gives to those who need help to participate in a program. A BILL is a proposed law. It has to do with the province. When you want to suggest a bill you talk to your MLA (see Our MLA's). A CABINET MINISTER is an elected representative who is in charge of a provincial government department. An ACT is a bill that has been passed by the legislative assembly and singed by the Lieutenant Governor. It is also known as a law. A POLITICAL PARTY is an organization made up of people who have similar points of view about how to govern. Voting districts are called CONSTITUENCIES. Alberta is divided into different CONSTITUENCIES for federal elections. A CONSTITUTIONAL MONARCHY is a system of government in which a monarchy is the head of state. In Canada the prime minister is the head of government. The SPEECH FROM THE THRONE describes what the government plans to do during the upcoming session of the legislature. CONSTITUENTS are the people living in the constituency that a member of government represents. An OPPOSITION MEMBER is an elected member of the Legislative Assembly who is not a member of the party in power.

Educating Albertans - Alberta government decides (through Alberta education) what is taught and it is common throughout Alberta. - This department gives money to school boards, support students with special needs 3. Managing Alberta’s Resources - Energy resources (oil and gas) are the Prov. Gov. Responsibility 4. Keeping Albertans Healthy - Health services such as hospitals 5. Provincial Governments Makes Laws - elected representatives are called MLA’s (members of the legislative assembly) - MLA’s make laws that are obeyed by people of province - How a law becomes a law: 1. Motion (known as a BILL) called the 1st reading 2. members and public study bill and give opinion, hold meetings, petitions, etc 3. 2nd reading in the Legislative assembly – debate and vote 4. vote passes and goes to 3rd read by the legislative assembly – discuss again 5. vote again and if passed 6. sent to Lieutenant Governor to be signed 7. becomes a law

B. How is the Provincial Government Elected?
 - candidates run for positions (MLA’s) in the provincial government on behalf of their political party - they run for the voting district (constituencies) in their area 1. Becoming a Candidate – must be: - and eligible voter - get a form from the Elections Alberta signed by at least 25 electors in their district 2. Making the Decision – the vote on Election Day – Voters must: - live in the constituency where thy want to vote - be a Canadian citizen and 18 years or older - live in Alberta for 6 months before election day. 3. How do you vote? 1. go to voting stations 2. Find the poll clerk and match my card # to the # on their ballot box 3. give them card and get a ballot 4. Go behind screen and put X beside my candidate 5. Fold and give ballot back to returning officer

C. What is the role of the Lieutenant Governor?
- Canada is a Constitutional Monarchy - The Queens Representative in the federal government is the Governor General - The Queens Representative in the provincial government is the Lieutenant Governor, who is appointed by the Governor General


E. How can people participate at the provincial level?

 -people can influence decisions by - voting in referendums, -expressing opinions about bills, - becoming a candidate for the Legislature, - contacting MLA’s about concerns, - voting in elections

We started today off with mathletics with focussing on ratios.
Then we did some typing.com to get ready for our story writing. 
We had DEAR and a snack.
Then with our grade 2 buddies with built magnet robots which was quite awesome.
Then we started the conflict guessing game before we ended our day with gym.

Today we started to venture into ratio in real life, ex: girls to boys, chairs to tables, etc.  We will be doing this the next couple of weeks.

Then we read with our grade 3 buddies, had a snack and read our own books we signed out from the library yesterday. 

In LA we learned about point of view (perspective in stories), and which ones might be better suited to young and upcoming writers.

We had ignite and gym and mindfulness today too before social.  In social students were able to start to make their own kahoot quizzes for the class to do next for the big test.  They also had science with Mr. Mueller, see his blog post for more on that.

Grade 6 ECO /Outdoor School Information Evening



We Grade 6 Teachers would like to invite you to an information sessions about the upcoming ECO/ Outdoor School field trip at the YMCA Camp Chief Hector. As you may recall, grade six students will be going to camp on March 9th to 12th for 4 days and 3 nights. We will also hand out YMCA subsidy forms and answer your questions during this event.

Today we learned about to cross multiply to solve for a missing number, which will help for more complex ratios.

After music we learned a lot about how to make a proper story and will continue to do for the next couple weeks.  We learning a lot of advance writing techniques about what makes a good story worth reading.

In the afternoon we continued to learn about the roles of MLAs and how a bill turns into an act, a provincial law.

In science learned about propulsion, by making straw rockets.

Welcome back!  Today we reviewed math from Sept to now and will do so tomorrow too before starting our new ratio unit.

In LA we started our new unit: Writing Narratives.  We learned what makes a story a story (a conflict and resolution) and will be continuing with structure and new information like secondary characters' purposes before moving into actual writing.

In social we dove into the provincial budget and how moving a couple percents around makes a big impact on departments and ministers roles in making those changes.

In science they continued with properties of air and aerodynamics.  See more on Mr. Mueller's blog.

Just want to say thank you for all the thoughtful cards, gift cards, home made treaties, chocolates, candy, and all the presents you all have graced me with these holidays!  I am way fatter now lol and will have a more full wallet thanks to not having to pay for Tim's every day!  You guys all rock! I love you all and you made my holidays so warm reading all the kind words!
