Today we read and prepared ourselves for the smudge outside.  It was great to see everyone in orange. 

After that we learned about the horrors residential schools and the story behind orange shirt day.  This was a big focus of our day! 

In the afternoon we did some common lit reading and questions with mathletics.

Today we did mathletics to start then we ran 302 laps for the Terry Fox Run as a class.  We also watched the power of one documentary about Terry Fox. We did some reading and practiced with personifications.  In social we are setting up for our first debate about whether cellphones should be allowed in class or not.

Today we did decimal place value, we are getting ready for our assessment next week.  In gym we went for a walk to get our legs ready for the  Terry Fox run tomorrow.

In social we learned more about decision making.  For LA we watched a Terry Fox documentary and had a class discussion around it.

In science we learned more about the functions of leaves.

Today we read as per usual to start then we did more decimal place value.  In social we explored why we have a government, rules, and a democracy.  In LA we did rhyming poems, the students wrote some pretty funny poems they shared.   We also did some reading assessments on Common Lit to get the reading and answering questions.

Today we read and dove deep into decimal place value.  In science we learned more about classifying leaves, especially coniferous ones.

In gym we did a big class walk around the community to get ready for Terry Fox Run and explore some leaves too.  

We wrote some literary devices in LA and got the class setup on common lit website.  We did 2 reading assessments on there as well.

In social we continued to learn about how to make informed decisions and what types of government are in the world.

Today we started off by reading and doing some reading assessments. 

We then counted the school vote of the student vote. 

Student vote across the whole country:
  • Liberals: 117 seats, 24% of the vote

  • Bloc Québecois: 20 seats, 2% of the vote

We then looked at how a minority Liberal government could impact Alberta and Calgary.
We had music and gym and a fire drill.  Our class was amazing during the fire drill!

In LA we explored Sound in poems: rhyme scheme, rhythm, repetition, and onomatopoeia. 

In science we started learning about the roles of leaves in forests, and the different types of leaves. 

In math we worked on decimal place value and will be for the rest of the week.

Today we read and talked about our weekends.  Then in math we reviewed place value up to the billions and how to write numbers: standard form, expanded form, written form, picture form, and how to express the value of a single digit.

In LA we started learning about poetry! I am very excited for this unit.

In social we followed some of the election coverage before starting our first unit on decision making.

In science we learned all about coniferous trees today.

Today we had a special guest speaker talking about the fall equinox.  Then we had some catch up on work time.  After that we did math and did our student vote.  We will post the results of the student vote mid week.  We then moved into our spelling test and marked them together.  After that we did our weekly appreciation circle and kindness box.  The students wrote some really kind messages today that touched my heart! We ended our day with kickball outside as we do on Fridays, it was an exciting match and class showed great sportsmanship throughout the gym period.

Today we started off reading and went to the library to get new books.

We finished our study of the student vote and will be voting tomorrow for the candidates of the student's choice.

Then we had gym and played spike ball, and compound games outside.

In LA we worked on our lit term posters, self portrait, and spelling sentences.

We took up this week's math as a class before working on place value on Mathletics. 

In afternoon we started learning about the types of tree and how deciduous trees are different than coniferous ones.

Today we read, then learned about what factors affect tree growth and the overall forest ecosystem.  After music we continued our current event study of the federal election.  We explored what makes democracy, why is it important to vote, and how political parties are formed. 

In math we worked on our handouts, then did mathletics.  


The students were amazing this afternoon when I was needed in the office, so said the sub teacher! So thank you!  The students then worked on their spelling sentences, self portrait, literary term poster and/or science unit cover page.

We had gym outside. 

We finally started social and are looking at the studentvote.ca program learning about each of the federal political parties and their stances. 

In LA we started researching literary terms to make a wall of them with examples and definitions. 

In science we learned about the 4 types of forests, and started the layers in the forest.

Today we read and hit up the library to get books.  In math we did the MIPI and if students finished early they worked on Tuesday's math they didn't finish. 

We had our first music class, gym and recess.

We started our intro into Trees and Forests science unit. 

In the afternoon we made our class contract and started to work on our self portraits.  We will be doing one every 6-8 weeks to see our progress.

Today we read before diving into place value work.  After that we almost finished our display board, pics to be posted on here soon!

Then we had recess and snack followed by going over some classroom rules and expectations.

They had their first gym class with the new specialist, Mrs. Sterne.


Then we did art today for about 1.5 hrs.  We did origami.  Since the students were working in groups I figured it would be nice to do something solo at their desks.


We also had mindfulness and and recess in the afternoon in between art.

Today we started with reading, then setting the tetherball stations up outside for the school before our teacher led gym with me.

After gym we organized our notebooks and folders before starting place value in math.

At 10:30am is our recess, so please have a breakfast or snack on the way to school, as we do an in class snack at 10:45am.   Our lunch at late too at 12:30pm.

Then we worked on our display board for the month of September about the Pillars of Care and 7 sacred teachings.

Today we did our pasta tests, and one group held up a few books! Then we cleaned the class after that.

After we did some team building games like the string game and musical chairs before recess and snack.  After that we marked the math tests, and our class did quite well! 

Then we wrote a letter to our future self, or a letter to the teacher for 30mins.  

After that we did a class bingo game so the students could learn more about each other.

We ended the day outside for gym, with kickball and was an exciting match 8-6!

Today we started off cleaning up our building mess from yesterday,   Then we got to making our desk tags, coat rack tags, and display board boarder.  We also did a basic fact math quiz and the Edmonton Spelling test.  Both will be sent home tomorrow and hopefully returned. 

In the afternoon we built our pasta and marshmallow towers and will be testing them tomorrow morning.

WELCOME BACK TO 2021 / 22 School Year!

I had such an amazing day meeting all of your kids. I think the team we are building in room 19 this year is going to be one of the best ones yet! 

Today we organized the room and supplies.  Then we built spike ball and tether ball sets for the school, and we tested them out and it was quite fun. 

Then we built stuff for the student vote Sept 20th for the federal election. 

In gym we played a variety of dodgeball games.

Finally, we got into ice breakers, name games, and some fun stuff before lunch.

After lunch we had recess and did mindfulness before our straw n' tape tower competition. The goal was to build the tallest tower that supported a wiffle ball with its own self-supporting base (not taped or leaning). 

Tomorrow we are going to building the strongest tower with pasta and marshmallows. 

I am very excited for tomorrow and to keep the momentum going.
